Cotton plaster to improve room sound
Just like a large curtain in a room, cotton plaster can positively influence the sound in a room by reducing reverberation.
This recording studio was renovated and newly equipped with cotton plaster. Measurements were taken before and after the walls were coated with cotton plaster. The absorbers had not yet been installed at the time of the second measurement.
Effects that improve the spatial sound
We regularly receive enthusiastic feedback from our customers about the improvement in the sound of the room after renovation with cotton plaster. But what is the reason?
This question could now be answered through measurements in the recording studio in conjunction with expert knowledge.
These diagrams show the reverberation time before and after the walls were coated with cotton plaster. The additional absorbers were only installed after the measurement. This is the difference between the previously painted wall and the wall coated with cotton plaster.
A significant echo reduction is already noticeable from 300 Hz, which extends up to the range of over 10 kHz.
The frequency range between 2 kHz and 5 kHz is responsible for the differentiation of words, since in this range the consonants of the words predominate.
Reducing echo in this range improves clarity . Higher Clarity values mean more intelligible dialogue and music.
This is clearly visible in the two measurements before and after coating the walls with cotton plaster.
Conclusion
Cotton plaster is able to improve the sound in a room by reducing the echo. To achieve the greatest possible effect, decors with a coarse and airy structure should be used. In this specific case, the walls were coated with Basis T Yellow and Gloss Decor 6.
Increasing the application thickness can also improve the effect.
It is also possible to cover the walls with sound-absorbing materials such as rock wool, foam or similar and to spray on cotton plaster as a protective and decorative top layer.
We hope you have fun trying it out and look forward to your feedback!
